ALGEBRA I 10-12 BLOCK

Course Code: 4616

Grade Level: 10, 11, 12        Credits: 10       UC/CSU: Yes

Prerequisite: None

This is an algebra course based on the standards set by the state of California. The essential goals include but are not limited to: writing, solving, and graphing linear and quadratic equations and inequalities; solving systems of equations and inequalities; applying rules of exponents; factoring polynomials, performing operations with polynomials, simplifying and solving equations with rational expressions. Symbolic reasoning and calculations with symbols are central in algebra. Through the study of algebra, a student develops an understanding of the symbolic language of mathematics and the sciences. In addition, algebraic skills and concepts are developed and used in a wide variety of problem‐solving situations.

GEOMETRY

Course Code: 4710

Grade Level: 9-12               Credits:10                 UC/CSU: Yes

Prerequisite: A grade of “C” or better in Algebra I. Students in 8th grade must demonstrate proficiency on the district Algebra I benchmark tests as well as proficiency on the 7th grade California Standards Test.

This course covers the properties of points, lines, planes, polygons, circles, and solids. Coordinate geometry is an important part of the course as are problems on constructions, and an introduction to trigonometry. Throughout the course both inductive and deductive proofs are employed along with definitions and postulates to prove theorems.

GEOMETRY BLOCK

Course Code: 4719

Grade Level: 9-12               Credits: 10                UC/CSU: Yes

Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in high school mathematics and/or teacher recommendation.

This course covers such topics as deductive, inductive and indirect reasoning, triangles, quadrilaterals, other basic geometric figures, parallel and perpendicular lines, polygons, circles, geometric constructions, arcs, angles, areas, volumes, coordinated geometry and trigonometry. Meets one year of the mathematics graduation; prepares students for Algebra II.

MATH ANALYSIS

Course Code: 4730

Grade Level: 10, 11, 12        Credits: 10                UC/CSU: Yes

Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in Algebra II.

Math Analysis is a college preparatory course‐preparing students to take college level or AP Calculus. This year long course is based on the California state standards for Trigonometry and Mathematical Analysis. The topics include: Functions and Graphs; Polynomial and Rational Functions; Exponential and Logarithmic functions, Trigonometric functions, Analytic Trigonometry; Matrices and Systems of Equations; Discrete Mathematics; and Analytic Geometry in Two and Three Dimensions.

AP CALCULUS

Course Code: 4750

Grade Level: 11, 12              Credits: 10                UC/CSU: Yes

Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in Math Analysis.

This course consists of a full high school academic year of work that is comparable to the first semester of college calculus. With a sufficiently high score on the AP test a student can receive college credit. The course emphasizes a multidimensional approach to calculus in which problems are represented numerically, graphically, analytically and verbally.

CAHSEE MATH

Course Code: 4808

Grade Level: 11, 12              Credits: 5 (elective)            UC/CSU: No

Prerequisite: 12th grade students who have not passed the CAHSEE Math. Students will be allowed to transfer out of this course after receiving confirmation of passing CAHSEE scores from the state. During the second semester the course will be open to 11th graders who have not yet passed the test.

This course is intended for students who have not passed the mathematics portion of the exit exam. The course will include review of arithmetic skills as well as a review of Algebra I. This course does not fulfill the State’s requirement that all students take an Algebra I course. Student should not be enrolled in this class until they have first attempted Algebra I.
