Professional Learning Community (PLC)

The PLCs at Seaside High have been based on the research of Richard and Rebecca DuFour, who have successfully developed a model of support for educators, focused on student learning. The leaders of the PLC at Seaside High School recognize the need for teachers to work together in a collaborative manner with a focus on student learning. They have allowed the PLC leadership team to learn and grow throughout the process of leading the Content-Specific Cohorts into the building of cohesive teams dedicated to student learning.
The PLC movement at SHS is pivotal in the Turnaround School Model. Currently, PLCs work within two formats: the school-wide PLC meets the first Wednesday of each month, while the Content-Specific Cohorts, which share common curriculum, meet the remaining three Wednesdays of each month. Each meeting is approximately two hours in length. In general, the Content-Specific Cohorts made significant progress building teams of teachers focused on student learning, based on data, and driven by teacher-initiated SMART goals. These teams are essentially focusing on the keys for student learning as reflected by these four questions:
· What do we want each student to learn?
· How will we know when each student has learned it?
· How will we respond when a student experiences difficulty in learning?
· How will we respond when a student already knows it?
The PLC Leadership Team believes the PLC process has had a positive effect on both teachers and students, and has helped to positively change the culture of SHS into one focused more on student learning. The PLC Leadership Team has collected months of data during the process while supporting teams that have faced challenges. In a spring exit survey of teachers, when asked what was the most positive or effective shift in instruction and culture at SHS, the overwhelmingly positive response was Professional Learning Communities.
